Time to move?
Senior Apartments:  regular apartments that are age-restricted (55 or 62 and older), and generally offer a lower rent than other apartments.  No services. $800 – 2000 per month in San Diego County

Independent living:  no services, but the monthly rent includes light housekeeping, most meals, and linen service. Perfect for seniors who are lonely or need meals provided, but have no care needs. Can be quite social with activities directors who manage activities on site or off site.  Private pay ranges from $1500-6,000 per month.

Assisted living:  Licensed community that can administer medications, and provide the extra oversight and care that aging will need. Trained caregivers are on duty 24/7. Levels of care vary greatly with each community.  Pricing is all private and will range from $2000-10,000 per month. Care charges are extra.

Memory Care:  licensed assisted living communities with special routines and trained caregivers designed to prove the safe care that persons with a diagnosis of dementia require. Levels of care vary greatly with each community.  Pricing is all private and will range from $3000-10,000 per month.

Residential Care Homes:  licensed assisted living homes in residential neighborhoods that typically have approval for 6 residents. Ideal for more frail seniors and for seniors with limited means. Most will care for dementia patients. Levels of care vary greatly with each residential care home.  Pricing is usually all inclusive and can range from $1500-10,000 per month.

Skilled nursing homes:  medical communities for residents with a medical need, and/or care needs and not the financial means to pay for assisted living. Those residents are paid for by MediCal, and it is very hard to find an available bed for MediCal. Skilled nursing homes usually provide in-house rehabilitation services for discharged hospital patients, under a Medicare plan.  Private pay is at least $6000 per month.
